Most hairdressers back in the eighties, posers were defined.
It wasn't our fault if we had good taste, so we didn't really mind.
Our favourite hobby was shopping on our day off on Mondays,
after a week closed up in the salon, that was definitely our fun day.
We'd go up the street to Kilmarnock or to Glasgow on the train,
bargain hunting and getting good deals, was our favourite game.
Chelsea girl, Wrygges and Graftons too
fantastic shops where we'd spend a penny or two.
We knew exactly what we were looking for,
we got it right every single time!
Our dress sense was instinctive,
we felt confident, classy and refined.
Another year has passed, once again it's holiday time.
Two weeks in Salerno, we're so excited and feeling fine!
My best friend loves Italy and going to the sea,
we love going abroad together and she likes to be with me.
We got one of those charter flights at a really low price,
when we board the plane we're dressed up really nice.
An airforce blue jumpsuit and pink pointed shoes for me,
fuchsia hoop earrings, and a satchel to match perfectly.
Purple Kajal and mascara, glossy lips for me and my friend,
our shoulders padded, our waists are tight, to follow the current trend.
A deep plum rinse through my hair, to make it glisten and shine.
My friend has a 'big' perm, streaked of burgundy, reminding us of Italian wine.
She wears big lilac sunglasses and a striped flying suit too,
her hair high and lacquer sprayed, her violet wedges brand new.
We're assured and confident and dressed for the occasion.
Hey! We're getting the plane, we're going on a vacation!
We are about eighteen years old and raring to go
we're a pair of nutters and we get on great on our own!
We don't need a big crowd to have a good laugh,
whenever we're together we're the perfect match.
We're already giggling, over-excited and thrilled,
we try hard to control ourselves, but we just can't stay still.
Pilots and hostesses in their smartest blue uniforms,
pulling their trolleys aboard and smiling in unison.
I love to be here, it's so glamorous and stimulating.
The crew members are classy, sophisticated and fascinating.
They're confident and fluent when they speak foreign languages,
Efficient and prompt, they help us sort out our baggage.
"Wow! did you see him" I say, before we sit down,
"The steward, he's really cool," He's so muscular and brown,
six feet tall, broad shoulders, with those deep turquiose eyes
that shine through blond wisps, like sparkling stars in the sky.
Gosh he's so gorgeous, who was to say,
that this terrific holiday would start off this way!
"He's looking right at us, I feel like screaming, I'm about to die!"
What's he going to say, he's heading towards us and we're wondering why.
"Good morning ladies," he says, his eyes penetrating and bright!
"Caledonian airlines wishes you a safe, comfortable flight"
His perfect pearly white teeth are glinting and gleaming
and our faces are scarlet red
... we're embarassed and beaming.
It's going to be fabulous, we can already tell
it's only just starting and it's going so well!
"Ladies and gentleman, may I have your attention please!"
we'll soon be landing in Naples. The sky is clear and it's 30 degrees.
In the meantime please fasten your seatbelts and put up your trays.
The Caledonian crew would like to wish you a pleasant stay!"
"Benvenuti a Napoli," says the hunky steward,
with a very sexy accent and staring at us hard,
looking right at us with those hypnotic blue eyes,
it's as if I've turned to stone, I'm completely paralysed,
he's so gorgeous, I cannot move, I do not budge,
he smiles and winks an eye, my friend gives me a nudge
...I'm almost forced out of a temporary trance,
still wondering to myself, "Did I ever had a chance?"
We start giggling as usual, our heads go mush,
"I only saw this guy two hours ago and I've already got a crush."
The heat is unbearable as we step of the plane
our flying suits now roasting, who is to blame?
That hot, stuffy air, almost suffocating, clammy and warm.
Eek! There are blotchy stains forming under our arms.
"Why did we wear these stupid jumpsuits in the first place?"
When it's impossible to undress!
Hope the Italian guys don't notice
...We're in a real sweaty mess!
My mum and dad are waiting, already there to pick us up,
a quick kiss on our cheeks, in dad's hand a small espresso cup.
Mum says "Are you hungry?" I tell her we had some snacks before.
Dad takes our cases and we're running ahead and chatting once more.
"Have you forgotten to pack? They seem almost empty!" He says
"Having no idea of how we've planned to spend the money we've saved."
We'll go to the open-air market, where we'll stay for a few hours,
we'll buy, crisp cotton gypsy skirts and some fresh, flimsy trousers,
I want a long cheesecloth dress and a skirt made of shorts,
a pair of high wooden clogs and some cheeky flip-flops.
A sassy beach towel and a new bikini is a must.
Our cases will be jam packed and the seams might even burst!
Who needs Gucci or Versace, Armani and Dolce e Gabbana,
with some know-how and good taste we'll make our own 'Stile Italiana!'
Ritzy brand imitations, but just as nice,
stylish and beautifully sewn, at a very low price.
We'll buy hand-stitched, espadrilles made of real leather
by precise craftsmen who sit outside, whatever the weather.
Not much sight seeing for us, we prefer to lay
on golden sandy beaches where we can relax all day.
With our Bergasol oil and its rich coconut smell,
we'll go dark brown, we'll look so much healthier as well
...And The Acapulco disco, on those long summer nights
to 'Ride like the wind' we'll dance under the moonlight.
'I can feel it coming In the air tonight' by Phil...
'Hotel California' and I'm already feeling that thrill!
We'll take boat trips to Amalfi, Ischia and Positano
we'll see the sporty wind surfers and the catamaranos.
Oh God it's going be so fabulous, I can already tell
...Those particular aromas, that freshly ground coffee smell,
the luscious fragrance of baked cornettos, rising through the air,
plump Sorrentino lemons, hanging casually here and there.
Pizzette, granitas and multiple flavours of ice-cream,
Fragolatas and cold juices, as refreshing as a dream!
The clanking and clattering sound of Sampietrini stones,
impatient drivers in short-sleeved shirts and honking car horns!
People waving and chattering, the car windows rolled down,
How chaotic is Naples, so lively, with no time to frown.
Lazy tourists around round tables, savouring juicy green olives,
the Neopolitans observing but still having no knowledge
...of what the quiet foreigners are silently talking about,
while they wave their hands in the air and continue to shout.
We see old widows dressed in black, resting on straw covered chairs,
precisely peeling fat aubergines, on these long lazy days.
Rosary beads dangling from their wrists, waiting to be recited,
while their grandkids run around them, sweltered and excited.
White cotton handkerchiefs to pat their worn, wrinkled brows,
they sit in the shade where sweat doesn't drip down.
Balconies wide open, thinly sliced courgettes drying in the sun,
mosquito nets move gently to the rhythm of wooden drums.
Beautiful women with painted red lips and pleasant smiles,
looking confident and swish with their elegant style,
wearing classy, hand-sewn sandals made of calfskin leather
and halter neck dresses, ideal for the Mediterranean weather.
My friend and I are now melting in our 'cool' jumpsuits
feeling suddenly awkward, and not as good as we should.
Cocky guys on motorinos, hanging around busy, crowded bars
"Hey bella!" They bawl from the open sunroofs of their cars,
bold enough to look straight at you with their dark brown eyes!
So care-free and relaxed under these clear blue skies,
with their sunbronzed skin, bermudas, and sunglasses,
the atmosphere's perfect to start summer romances.
"Ignore them, they are just silly boys" Says my dad.
(He's a bit jealous of his daughter and already a bit mad)
The sweetest sax music oozes from the corner,
the temperatures rising and it's getting so much warmer.
Mandolins, 'O sole mio' and serenades,
on pavements, outside cafès, so tenderly played.
Street artists painting portraits as souvenirs,
so typical in Naples at this time of the year.
Pizzas and spaghetti with cockles and mussels,
busy housewives shopping
...The hustle and the bustle.
This marvellous town never ceases to astound
with the buzzing, frenetic, big noisy crowds!
The vesuvius disappears slowly from the view of our car
with its timeless charm, seems so near, but yet so far,
and as we leave the motorway,
we see the marvellous, immense sea
...Shivers, chills, tingles and thrills
...And I suddenly feel free.
The sheer beauty of the Amalfitana coast, enchanting and clear,
its stunning scenery, surprising us once again, every single year.
As Salerno becomes visible to our excited eyes
we're lost in emotion...we're mesmerized!
The boats in the harbour...the glimmering blue sea.
...There's no other place in the world we'd rather be.
Let the fun begin, let these two weeks last so long
I love to be back home
...where I feel I belong.
